A late 18th century neoclassical english statuary marble chimneypiece inlaid with contrasting portoro nero marble circa 1795 with moulded shelf breaking forward and protruding ove.

Not much is known about pietro bossi although much inlay work of the late 18th century is commonly known as bossi work. Opening width 851 mm 33 in. Overall height 1213 mm 47 in. Sienna marble interior slips 19th century. Shelf width 1524 mm 60 in. The moulded shelf above an inlaid faux fluted freize centred by a rectangular tablet applied with a drapery hung urn the corresponding faux fluted jambs with urn cappings on block feet.

With satyr masks on the endblocks supported on the jambs also of statuary with inlaid green marble panels with two carved amorini one. The central plaque depicts two carved seated winged griffons either side of a flaming urn two inlaid green marble panels either side. An italian craftsman bossi worked in dublin from 1785 to 1798 and used coloured marble inlay and also a coloured paste inlay known as scagliola on a white marble ground. Opening height 889 mm 35 in. This exceptional chimneypiece is one of three bossi s from a private collection each bought during the 1980 s from three different georgian buildings.
